Psyllium Fiber

Complete evidence review for diabetes management

A

Evidence Rating

Strong Evidence

Summary

Psyllium husk fiber has strong evidence for reducing post-meal glucose spikes and improving overall glycemic control. Meta-analyses show consistent A1C reductions of 0.3-0.5% and significant improvements in fasting glucose. As a soluble fiber, it slows carbohydrate absorption and has additional benefits for cholesterol reduction.

What is Psyllium Fiber?

Psyllium forms a gel when mixed with water, which slows gastric emptying and carbohydrate absorption in the small intestine. This reduces the post-meal glucose spike. It also improves gut microbiome composition and increases production of short-chain fatty acids that benefit glucose metabolism.

Clinical Evidence

Key studies supporting Psyllium Fiber's use in diabetes management:

Gibb et al. (2015)

Meta-analysis of 35 RCTs examining psyllium supplementation in Type 2 diabetes. Psyllium significantly reduced fasting glucose by 37 mg/dL and A1C by 0.52% compared to placebo. Effects were dose-dependent.

PubMed

Ziai et al. (2005)

8-week randomized trial in 49 patients with Type 2 diabetes. Psyllium 5.1g twice daily reduced A1C from 8.9% to 8.3% and fasting glucose from 259 to 205 mg/dL. Also reduced LDL cholesterol by 13%.

PubMed

Anderson et al. (1999)

8-week trial comparing psyllium to cellulose placebo in 34 men with Type 2 diabetes. Psyllium 5.1g twice daily reduced post-meal glucose by 19.2% and all-day glucose by 11%. LDL cholesterol dropped 13%.

Drug Interactions

Critical Warning: Always consult your healthcare provider before combining Psyllium Fiber with any diabetes medication.

InsulinLow RiskMay require insulin adjustment as glycemic control improves. Monitor blood sugar and adjust doses gradually.
LithiumModerateMay reduce lithium absorption. Take lithium at least 2 hours before or after psyllium.

Dosage

The most studied protocol is 5-10g daily. Choose plain psyllium husk powder without added sugars, artificial sweeteners, or flavorings. Organic is preferred to avoid pesticide residues. Start with a small dose and always mix with at least 8 oz of water.
